Abstract

Andrew and Scott co-founded Let's Talk About [X] in 2015 as a way to showcase the fantastic research that students create across the University in many quiet corners, where the only people who ever see the output might be the student's collaborators, their supervisor, and the person who marks their dissertation. Their interest was borne out of being part of a multidisciplinary team that works across campus, giving them a unique insight into the range and breadth of output created at UofG, and their remit to teach students about communciation. From that, a multidisciplinary, multi-audience communication event was created.

This talk will showcase one of each of their own big research projects, both niche in detail and scope, but presented in a way that (hopefully) makes the relevance, the impact, and the interest obvious to listeners from any discipline.

Bio

Dr Andrew Struan – Director of Academic Services in Student and Academic Services

Andrew has worked across the globe in academic literacies and in political history. Here at the University he leads award-winning, multi-disciplinary teams, including Student Learning Development, Academic and Digital Development, Transnational Collaborations and more. His PhD, from the University of Glasgow, is in political history: he researches the linguistic history of parliamentary debate and the role of language in shaping ideologies.

Dr Scott Ramsay – Deputy Head of Student Learning Development

Scott has a PhD in Molecular & Cellular Biology from the University of Glasgow, where he initially taught extensively in undergraduate tutorials and labs and now is Deputy Head of Student Learning Development for the Sciences, Maths and Stats team. He coordinates the credit-bearing modules 'Intro to Communicating Science', 'Rationality and Scientific Debate', and 'Contemporary Public Science Communications', as well as two modules on T2G, the transition course open to all incoming undergraduates.
